Julia Gorostidi (1983) is a French/Swiss artist and designer based in Barcelona. She graduated in Graphic Design from the ECAL (BA. Lausanne, CH, 2005) and in Fine Arts from the Goldsmiths College (MFA, London, UK, 2015)
Working in the fields of video, performance and installation, Gorostidi develops long and short term projects that look at the role of subjectivity and colective narratives in the construction and representation of the Self. In her work she often creates fictional biographies or auto-biographies that explore the questions of Identity as a result or product of our social structures and relations. Her projects develop both on a digital and physical level and generally use automatic and collaborative creation techniques to question and deconstruct the contemporary notions of Authenticity, Autonomy, Authorship, Identity and Alterity. In the recent years, she has focused her attention on orality and the malleability of collective memory through the spoken word.
Since 2015 Julia Gorostidi participated in several artistic projects and residencies in Spain, France, Austria, Belgium, England, Rusia and Colombia. Her work was shown amongst others in: Mécènes du Sud Montpellier – Sète (Montpellier/FR); Flora Ars+Natura, (Bogota/CO), Blueproject Foundation (Barcelona/ES), Fabra i Coats, Barcelona (Barcelona/ES), Art3, (Valence/FR), Sokol, (Moscow/RU); APT Gallery (London/UK).
In 2020, with the birth of her second child, Julia Gorostidi decided to make a pause in her artistic practice. Since 2023, she is returning to her activity as an artist that she combines with her graphic design jobs and her sporadic teaching activity. Recently she received a grant from the Department of Culture of Barcelona to continue an artistic research about oral tradition as an adaptative practice of collective creation, cohesion and social resistence.
